Amper (PHL) Mentor : Dr. Neil Sahota Research Title : Mapping Heat-Sensitive Zooxanthellae to Predict Coral Bleaching Risk in the Andaman Seas and the Gulf of Thailand Research summary : This project aims to predict coral bleaching risk in Thai reefs by using machine learning (MaxEnt software) to map the distribution of zooxanthellae, the symbiotic algae living within coral tissue. Objectives : To develop high-resolution distribution maps of two zooxanthellae – Cladocopium (heat-sensitive), Durusdinium (heat-tolerant) and to understand how their presence affects coral resilience to bleaching. Methodology : 1. Collect environmental data. (sea surface temperature, salinity and chlorophyll) 2. Use remote sensing, GIS, and satellite data. 3. Train the MaxEnt model with species occurrence data. 4. Generate predictive maps showing where heat-sensitive symbionts are likely to occur. Progress and Future Plans : We are currently in the data visualization stage; Maps of environmental conditions and symbiont locations are being finalized for modelling and future improvements include adding field data and exploring molecular interactions between corals and algae Recommendations : Field validation is essential for accuracy but currently limited due to resource constraints, Future studies should combine satellite and onsite data and suggested expansion into molecular biology to better understand coral-algae resilience mechanisms. Conclusion : This project shows how science and technology, especially machine learning can work together to protect some of the world’s most valuable ecosystems before it’s too late; by turning data into action, we hope to make a small but meaningful contribution to the fighting against coral bleaching in Thailand and beyond |
